PHILOSOPHY FOR THE DIGITAL AGE
The Matrix a philosophical tour de force and Hollywood's surrealistic nightmare, in which everything is thrown into question. The funny thing to me, is of course, that the true nature of reality, has always been up for grabs. Philosophers of every age have spent countless sleepless nights, trying to pin down that age old question, am I really here? It's amazing to have seen the effect these movies have had on some of their audiences, like some global thought experiment, perpetrated by the Wachowski Brothers, it has brought about a global questioning of things, that I believe, the state would rather you didn't. Authority is control, but if you don't believe in the reality that you are supposed to, then control may go out the window.
As Neo put it,"…I'm going to show you… a world without rules or controls, without borders or boundaries, a world where anything is possible. Where we go from there is a choice I leave to you."
Of course in the real world, the individual dissolves into the melee and reality once again becomes nothing more than what we can see, hear and touch, what a shame. But just remember, that this may soon change, as nanotech, the net and VR start to revolutionize both society and the individual reality each of us perceive.
The Matrix is obviously an extension of many different philosophical ideas, which have been mashed together so as to form a vision of the future which should terrify us all, but to delve deeper into it, then you first need to realise how it's creators were inspired. You may think they got most of their ideas from watching or reading oh so much manga, but of course this not the case. The Matrix's culmination of Hong Kong style action, biblical epic, CG, Sci-Fi and deep philosophical questions, was just begging to be made, at this point in human history.
