HDTV (High
Definition TV) is becoming the norm, so the VR models where to be
created with this level of detail from the outset so allowing them to enjoy
a very long shelf life, obviously most current home network connections
couldn't squeeze this level of detail to the average end user, (bandwidth
limitations would prevent it, although compression technology is making this
less of a problem So the level of detail and the complexity of the CG models
seen at the users end would have depended upon the
modeling software
employed, but scaled version’s of the models should have been capable of
being squeezed down whichever pipe (network connection) the end user had.
See section 3 for more on this. This is becoming less and less a problem, as
bandwidth
increases.
Future Proof.
Just as
with any technology driven industry there is usually the risk of becoming
obsolete after a certain time, but the franchised database concept was
seen as being future proof. What has to be considered, is
that any mass produced platform, will always take time to develop and to get
to market so giving advanced warning of what is to come. This means the
databases could have always been ready for whatever hardware the mass market
used –THE DATABASES WHERE TO HAVE BEEN
PLATFORM INDEPENDENT
- (I.e. it was envisioned as being able to eventually
connect to any net device capable). The virtual images contained
would have remained the property of the operator and if some new higher
quality modelling system came out etc, then the system was to be updated
online, along with any of the models or images. Also, because the system was
seen as developing into a globally franchised network, then some markets
would have developed later than others, so giving the 3D models and sounds
an extremely long shelf life.
Customised Software.
Most people love
to watch movies and like to see their favorite actors, pop stars etc. The
network could have allowed the end users to interact with their favorite
A.I. controlled actors or pop stars or any virtualised character. This would
have been one of the most interesting and probably most lucrative aspects of
the databases abilities. If it had managed to become globally franchised,
then each of the franchisees could have inputted their own local celebrities
and background imagery etc. In this way the networks image, sound and avatar
database could have grown, so cost effectively increasing the content
contained within the network.
These famous personalities or
Avatars would have been
nothing more than customised software copies, at the end of the day, this
was all that was being proposed, just customised software. The end users on
the other hand, would have been seeing and interacting with their favorite
personalities and of course paying both the franchise operator and the local
franchisees for that experience.
Proof Of How Much Virtual Characters Can Be Worth.
The biggest virtual character to date is
LARA CROFT the star of all the
Tomb Raider games; she has been in adverts and all sorts of other
merchandised goods. She is actually worth more than all
of the Spice Girls put together. Lara Croft
is just one character; the developers of the concept could have owned the
rights to millions. Also the Tomb Raider movies, go to show just how big the
games industry has become. Lara has made
Eidos a bloody fortune, but at the end of the day, lARA, is
just another piece of virtual real estate for
rent.
Telecommunications Companies: -
These companies face and have faced up to
the digital revolution, seeing as how there is only so much they can make
from line rental. As all phone calls and Internet connections may soon
become free, then these companies will have to find a new source of income.
This will come from the uploading of content to a mass audience. Most
telecommunications giants are in static markets, but the proposal tried to
show that it was possible to break into these markets and exploit existing
set-ups. The following is an extract that was seen as way of highlighting
this issue.
The cyber sex industry
obviously the system could have been used to provide all sorts of virtual
characters and romantic settings. The incorporation of force feedback
devices could have allowed the comically named
teledildonics industry a new
avenue for their
creations and wares. The net and the sex industry are now
synonymously linked, but the revenues that could have been generated from
this section of users, could have been very substantial. If your into this

BT Share's Local Loops With
Rivals: - UK consumers will be able to keep their BT
phone services whilst taking a data service down the same phone line from a
rival operator. The unbundling of local loops in the US, has managed to
significantly stimulate ISP growth and this has also happened in the UK. In
respect to the system, this simply equated to more network operators to
exploit. Bandwidth and content are seen as the future markets for all
communication companies, BT and the UK government are pushing to get all UK
homes connected via fiber optic by 2010 (no chance).
Digital cable and satellite boxes are the start of the
mass audience VR revolution, the virtual middlemen are already in your home,
these systems will keep increasing in capability until they reach the
vision, proposed throughout this ebook.
The Display Industry:-
The introduction of full colour flexible low cost display mediums, will
eventually give users the ability to fold screens up into smaller packages.
There are many new types of displays being worked on, from screens using
organic
light emitting diodes to screens utilising new techniques in
manufacturing polymers (imagine
a plastic or
liquid screen). This is all leading to what the industry is calling
E-ink or
paper, a cheap, mass produced
display that could
receive information, just like a laptop, except these future net devices
could also be folded up like a newspaper. Home systems
will also become more discreet, flat panel displays hanging on walls etc,
displaying both TV and internet content plus your
new virtual reality environments. Also check out

Toshiba have already produced a
large
super-slim polysilicon TFT LCD display, which is a precursor to
producing foldable screens, you should check
this
and Organic Thin Film Transistor technology (OTFT).
My money is on
mini holographic laser projectors
and Super Hi-Vision (SHV) or
UHD,
coming in at a resolution of
7680 x 4320 pixels or maybe Imax 3d at home, there are people working on
it.
